Downtown Dreams

This body of work represents a small portion of over 30 years of my images, exploring the world's forgotten architectural sites. This has been an ongoing project since 1989 that I continue to indulge. In America, we tend to stucco over or tear down our past, and replace it with subpar, soulless boxes. My intention is to artistically preserve these structures. We should not forget these nostalgic series of dreams. They are displayed here for our memories; for our children's memories. As Jack Kerouac said
"I realized these
were all the snapshots
which our children would look at
someday with wonder...."

Images where shot on Film & Digital ranging from 35mm, 120, to 4x5 formats.

Part of my Hotel Chelsea series created while staying at the hotel off an on from 1998-2005.

I stayed at the Chelsea for many years because of its inspiration and place in history.

The Chelsea opened its doors in 1884. The hotel became a mecca for artists. Many even traded art for studio space or a dry place to work. Artists like Jackson Pollack, Patti Smith, Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Bob Dylan, and the famed murder of Nancy Spungen by Sid Vicious are just a few stories inhabiting its halls.

I stayed at the Chelsea for many years because of its inspiration and place in history.

Patti’s perpetual dreams left impressions on pillows long tucked away in basements. Faded Polaroids buried in the walls. Music notes clog the drains. Spilled paints are the fine art of torn up floors. The last great novel neglects its story as the keys fade on  that rusty typewriter.

Image created of the historic CBGB's in New York City. The image was taken on halloween night in 98. I worked for years crafting images with music magazines in the 90's and 2000's and working at the birth place of Punk Rock and so many artist was an honor.

Hilly Kristal opened CBGB in 1973.  It’s known for being the birthplace of Punk and the famed venue of bands like the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and Talking Heads. It continued to be the innovative home for rock till closing in 2006.

Image created on a photo session in St. Petersburg Fl. While on property I spoke with the present owner of the hotel. She talked about the hotels prime days when a movie was filmed on site and how the Landmark was a tourist hotel for people visiting the springs.

"Life sometimes leaves marks. You can see and smell them on cool spring afternoons.  Movie stars and all night desk clerks with coffee and wine. I remember looking through drawn drapes at an empty parking lot"

Image of Banyan Tree Motel St. Petersburg Florida was created in 2022. The motel was in a prime location for its hay days located next to the Florida tourist attraction Sunken Gardens. The motel was named for a huge banyan tree located in a park behind the Motel.

"The brown and frayed leaves fall on rust stained concrete.
The cool April wind tries to hold that winter chill one last time, as the tar driveways heat up under barefoot children’s feet that cantor across an empty parking lot. That old desk clerk watches through smeared glass with one hand on his cane and the other stacking tourist brochures on a rotten wooden display. Sunken times, slouched floors, birds nesting. The leaves rest. The hotel’s abstention to that last limping step"
