DOWNTOWN DREAMS

Downtown Dreams

I have spent more than three decades wandering forgotten downtowns, aging theaters, roadside motels, vacant storefronts, and streets where time seems reluctant to move on.

At first, I believed I was photographing architecture.

Over the years, I realized I was photographing memory.

These buildings are more than brick, concrete, and fading neon. They are witnesses. Their walls have absorbed ordinary lives and extraordinary moments—first kisses, late-night conversations, family vacations, lonely departures, closing time, broken hearts, and quiet triumphs. Even after the people are gone, something remains.

America has a habit of paving over its past. Historic buildings disappear beneath stucco, demolition, and convenience, replaced by structures that rarely carry the same sense of history. My hope is not simply to preserve these places, but to acknowledge the lives that unfolded within them before they disappear.

Downtown Dreams began in 1989 and continues today. Created on 35mm, medium format, 4×5 film, and digital cameras, this ongoing body of work is an archive of places that continue to endure, quietly waiting for someone to notice they are still here.

As Jack Kerouac once wrote,

"I realized these were all the snapshots which our children would look at someday with wonder..."

Perhaps these photographs are not only preserving buildings.

Perhaps they are preserving the memories still living inside them.

Life Leaves Marks ©2022

Life leaves marks. You can see and smell them on warm summer afternoons. Fresh rain and humid glass. Movie stars and all-night desk clerks with coffee and wine. I remember looking through the drawn drapes at an empty parking lot.

Sunkin Dreams ©2022

The brown, frayed leaves fall on rust-stained concrete. The cool April wind tries to hold that winter chill one last time as the tar driveways heat up beneath the bare feet of children who cantor across an empty parking lot. That old desk clerk watches through smeared glass, one hand on his cane and the other stacking tourist brochures on a rotten wooden display. Sunken time. Slouched floors. Birds nesting. The leaves rest. The hotel's abstention from that last limping step. Banyan Tree Motel, St. Petersburg, FL, 1966

The Weekly Rat ©2022

The weekly rat with his car trunk open. Laptops that fell off a truck. Sly smiles, stolen sins, and a begged beer pay for weekly rooms. That breath with the smell of a cigarette smoked to its filter, and those yellow fingernails that never give back change. Flamingo Hotel, Ocala, FL, 1960
