Lights Out

Lights Out

Downtown Dreams

There is a moment after a neon sign goes dark when the building still seems to glow.

The tubes are cold. Letters disappear one at a time. Paint fades beneath the Florida sun. Yet somehow, the color remains—hanging above the sidewalk like a memory refusing to leave.

Lights Out is a hand-colored continuation of my Downtown Dreams series, an ongoing photographic exploration of forgotten architecture that began in 1989. I return to old negatives and digital files, selecting images of theaters, motels, storefronts, cafés, and roadside signs that once gave a street its identity.

Through hand-applied color, I am not trying to recreate these places exactly as they were. I am coloring them the way memory works—uneven, heightened, sentimental, and still alive.

In America, we often stucco over our history or tear it down completely, replacing buildings with soulless boxes that could stand anywhere. These photographs resist that erasure. They preserve the weathered façades, handmade lettering, broken neon, and quiet evidence of the people who once passed beneath those lights.

First dates. Last drinks. Late-night desk clerks. Family vacations. Empty sidewalks after closing time.

The photographs span more than three decades and were created using 35mm, 120, 4×5, and digital photography.

They are not photographs of decay.

They are small acts of remembrance—a final flicker before the lights go out completely.

As Jack Kerouac wrote:

“I realized these were all the snapshots which our children would look at someday with wonder….”
