Daniel Newcomb
Daniel Newcomb (b. 1973) is an American photographer, writer, and visual storyteller whose work explores memory, endurance, and the quiet histories carried by overlooked people and places.
For more than twenty-five years, Newcomb has worked as a commercial architectural photographer, creating images for internationally recognized architects, interior designers, and clients including Tommy Hilfiger, Kenny Rogers, David Ortiz, and Hard Rock International. Throughout that career, he has maintained a parallel fine art practice, photographing forgotten downtowns, aging theaters, abandoned architecture, and the people whose lives continue to shape those spaces.
Newcomb discovered photography at fifteen when his parents gave him his first 35mm camera and access to a darkroom. A shy teenager who found refuge in books, painting, music, and poetry, he was deeply influenced by writers and artists such as Jack Kerouac, John Steinbeck, Raymond Chandler, Charles Bukowski, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the improvisational spirit of jazz musicians like Miles Davis. Photography became the place where those influences converged. He began pairing his photographs with poetry and historical narratives, discovering that words could deepen the emotional conversation between an image and its viewer.
Working in film and now digital, Newcomb continues to carry both a camera and a journal wherever he goes. Photography and writing have become inseparable parts of the same creative practice—one preserving what the eye discovers, the other exploring what memory leaves behind.
His photographs have been exhibited throughout Florida and are held in private collections. He lives and works in Florida, where he continues to document the overlooked landscapes, architecture, and people that quietly endure.

Artist Statement
Who remains after the world has moved on?
For more than three decades, I have been drawn to what endures—photographing places and people that most pass without a second glance.
Empty theaters. Forgotten storefronts. Quiet streets. A neon sign long since burned out. Buildings waiting for another life. People waiting to be seen.
Time leaves its mark on people and places. One wears brick and peeling paint; the other, wrinkles, posture, and expression. Different surfaces carrying the same story.
I photograph people and places the world has overlooked—not to document what has been forgotten, but to recognize what still endures.
At first, I believed I was documenting architecture. Over time, I realized I was photographing memory.
Every abandoned space carries evidence of the people who once filled it. Every patinaed wall holds traces of conversations, celebrations, grief, and ordinary moments that have quietly disappeared.
My photographs are not about decay. They are about endurance—about time standing still and waiting for something. They linger in the fragile moment before time gives way and becomes something new.
Working for decades as a commercial architectural photographer taught me precision, patience, collaboration, and a respect for light. My personal work asks different questions. It explores how places become vessels for memory, how absence can feel as tangible as presence, and why forgotten spaces often reveal more about us than the monuments we preserve.
Whether I photograph an empty motel, a forgotten downtown, a person whom time seems to have forgotten, or the geometry of light crossing a neglected wall, I hope the viewer recognizes something of their own history within the frame.
We all leave places behind.
Sometimes the places refuse to leave us.
