Hotel Chelsea

Hotel Chelsea

Some buildings become landmarks.

Others become part of who you are.

If I have a second muse in my photographic life, it is the Hotel Chelsea.

I wandered through its hallways on and off throughout the late 1990s, camera in hand, drawn to a place where art seemed to seep from the walls. Every floor carried the weight of stories. Every worn staircase, every weathered door, every dimly lit hallway felt as though someone had just stepped away from a conversation with a poet, a painter, or a musician.

The Chelsea never felt like a hotel to me. It felt alive.

It was imperfect, noisy, beautiful, and unapologetically itself. A place where creative people gathered not because life was easy, but because making art mattered more than comfort. I found pieces of myself there long before I understood why.

These photographs are more than a record of an iconic building. They are memories of a place that reminded me what it meant to live an artistic life—to chase ideas, embrace imperfection, and believe that creativity could still exist in the cracks of an old brick wall.

The Chelsea has changed over the years, as all places eventually do. But through these photographs, I hope a small piece of its soul remains.

Like so much of my work, this series is less about architecture than memory. It is about preserving the places that quietly shape us before they disappear, leaving only stories behind.
